We are hiring!
We have several federally funded research positions available to work on projects related to tissue patterning and cell morphogenesis. Please see the appropriate trainee level below.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Undergraduate Researchers
for current HU students
If you are currently an undergraduate student at Howard University interested in independent research in the field of developmental biology, please email Dr Hunter directly and fill out the short survey here: https://forms.office.com/r/ATxH7NsFbC. Most semesters we have space for 2-3 undergraduate researchers. Most summers we will have 1-2 open spots for paid research.
Undergraduates in the lab are set up either individually or as a team to perform complete research projects with the aim of including these experiments in publications or as preliminary data in proposals. Projects are tailored to the student’s experience, availability, and interests. Undergraduate students will be directly supervised by either a senior member of the lab or the PI.
Examples of previous work performed by undergraduate students in the lab are: RNAi screen for regulators of nervous system development (skills: fly husbandry, live sample prep, microscopy, data analysis, presentation); testing custom antibodies (skills: fly husbandry, SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, microscopy, data analysis, troubleshooting); generating new Drosophila recombinants (skills: fly husbandry, genomic DNA prep, PCR, gel electrophoresis, analysis, microscopy).
Post-baccalaureate researcher/technician
We are currently looking for a post-baccalaureate trainee to join the lab as a researcher-technician. This individual would be responsible for performing research as part of the team, helping to maintain day-to-day functions of the lab, and training new students.

Research capacity of this position includes performing experiments that fall under the research goals of the lab. See www.hunterflylab.com for more details. You may also be asked to provide technical support for experiments set up by other team members. As technician, you will be tasked with maintaining essential work in the lab including, but not limited to maintaining fly stocks, supervising inventory, managing the lab website, and generating consumables (i.e., buffers, plates, etc)
Position requirements: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and previous laboratory experience (independent research or classroom). The ideal candidate should demonstrate responsibility, ability to follow detailed protocols and instructions, effective time management, and ability to work as part of a team. Pay will be scaled according to experience on the NIH scale: https://www.training.nih.gov/stipends//
Interested individuals should email Dr Hunter directly with a brief introduction (describe yourself and why you are interested in the position, no more than 1 page). Please also provide a current resume or CV and the names and contact information for 2-3 references.
Graduate Student (Research Assistant)
We are currently recruiting for a fully funded graduate student position. Candidates will take coursework and perform research with our team as part of their path towards earning a PhD in Biology at Howard University. This individual will work on a project related to our investigations on the mechanisms of cellular morphogenesis that regulate tissue patterning in Drosophila melanogaster. See www.hunterflylab.com for more details. All graduate students will receive the training they need to perform experiments in the lab including fly husbandry, microscopy, data analysis, and molecular biology techniques. Additionally, graduate students will develop writing and presentation skills through working on peer-reviewed articles and presentation at conferences. Graduate students are also expected to help mentor other trainees, as needed. Serving as a teaching assistant for the department will be optional.
Individuals interested in this position should have at least a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and previous laboratory experience (independent research or classroom). The ideal candidate should demonstrate responsibility, ability to follow detailed protocols and instructions, effective time management, and ability to work as part of a team. Candidates should be able to articulate why they are interested in pursuing a PhD and what career goals they envision for themselves.
It is recommended that you contact Dr Hunter prior to applying to the Graduate School. Email Dr Hunter directly with a brief introduction (describe yourself, why you are interested in PhD research with our team). Please also provide a current resume or CV and the names and contact information for 2-3 references.
